MARTIAL ARTS COALITION DECLARATION TO ABOLISH CAREY NEWMAN
Florida martial arts instructor is consistently and unjustifiably disrespectful and disruptive towards attendees during organized events; instigates trouble with officials and incites physical fights with instructors; attempts to negatively manipulate organizational alliances; and misrepresents his true status to the community.
At a June 2017 black belt training camp in south Georgia a coalition of martial art leaders from a number of states met and agreed to officially ban Carey Newman from participating in future activities regulated by the collective organizations. For several years multiple sources have claimed that the Lauderhill, Florida martial arts instructor is consistently and unjustifiably disrespectful and disruptive towards attendees during organized events; instigates trouble with officials and incites physical fights with instructors; attempts to negatively manipulate organizational alliances; and misrepresents his true status to the community.
Initially, Newman was given the benefit of the doubt and received support from a group of high ranking instructors after he made his own claims of being victimized by alleged jealous and controlling superior instructors out to compromise his business and reputation. As a result, numerous attempts were made over the years by respected martial art leaders to mentor Newman (at his request) in order that he gain better acceptance within the martial arts community. However, this strategy repeatedly failed giving his mentors the opinion that Newman is one of dishonorable intentions. Despite Newman’s consistent claim that he is never the cause of trouble it is interesting that the recognized heads of several organizations operating from northeastern United States down to southeast Florida choose to independently ban or disassociate with him due to negative experiences.
After reviewing what appeared to be a number of unending complaints expressed by a variety of independent groups and individuals the coalition responsible for promoting, hosting and operating martial arts events took a closer look at Newman’s behavior and concluded the following.
The coalition shall ban Carey Newman from all martial arts activities regulated by the organizations, respectively, and invite other martial arts organizations not affiliated with this coalition to do the same.
The coalition shall further ban or limit the participation of individuals under the instruction of Carey Newman from martial arts activities regulated by the organizations, respectively, until such time that it is believed that Newman is willing to conform to civilized and respectful codes of conduct.
The coalition shall not support individuals and/or organizations, when appropriate and proper, who choose to engage in martial art activities with Carey Newman as long as the existing circumstances remain.
The coalition shall not recognize any belt ranks or formal titles of Carey Newman beyond the level of Nidan (2nd degree black belt); and/or where such ranks maybe the origin of questionable quid pro quo agreements between Newman and instructors or organizations suspected of selling certifications without requiring the recipient (e.g. Carey Newman) to meet reasonable training, orientation and time under the certifying organization’s direct supervision and tutelage.
For decades the members of the coalition, independently and collectively, have strived to foster positive, peaceful and reputable martial arts activities for families and friends. The coalition believes that, for the good of society, this public declarations is necessary to denounce destructive, immoral and unethical behavior of martial art individuals and organizations who choose not to live and function harmoniously with others. To that end the coalition respectfully submits this declaration to serve as public acknowledgement herefrom. The instructors and organizations listed below are in support of the above declaration and have submitted their names to this declaration.
